Ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic technology that uses sound waves to monitor the internal organs of a patient. Although its most common application is during prenatal care, ultrasound is also commonly used to monitor ulcers, heart complications, digestive problems, and respiratory issues. Ultrasound technicians assist physicians, nurses, and other members of an ultrasound team with monitoring vital signs, sterilizing equipment, and transcribing relevant medical data.

The Importance of Ultrasound Technician Training
The US Department of Labor highlights several different paths for entry into this field. Many ultrasound technicians received on-the-job training at hospitals or clinics. Because medical technology improves exponentially, having a firm grounding will prove extremely advantageous for career advancement and employment prospects. This is why securing formal training from an accredited institution is strongly recommended. Lasting anywhere from two years to four years, ultrasound technician training through a college will provide you with an associate or bachelor degree in the field. The US Department of Labor points out that as the population continues to age, demand for ultrasound technicians, sonographers, and x-ray specialists will grow quite rapidly. From now until 2014, job opportunities for those with ultrasound technician training will grow much faster than the national average for all other occupations. Salary potential for the larger field of medical diagnostic sonography is quite impressive. In 2004, the median income was approximately $52,000. You can expect that salary to rise substantially as continued demand for ultrasound technology grows.
