There are several paths you can take to the career of surgical technologist. Surgical tech schools offer degree programs that take from 9 months to two years. With surgical tech schools training you can earn a certificate, diploma or associate degree. Surgical technologists (also called scrubs and operating room technicians) may also arrive in the position by training in hospitals or the military, or attending universities, community colleges, vocational schools or surgical tech schools.

Most employers want certified surgical technologists. After graduating from surgical tech schools programs you'll be prepared to sit for the national certifying examination administered by the Liaison Council on Certification for Surgical Technology.

Surgical Tech Schools Pave the Way for Careers

Surgical technologists work in the operating room alongside surgeons and the surgical team. Surgical techs are responsible for

Sterile and nonsterile preparation of the operating room
Instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure
Assisting the surgical team and monitoring patient vital signs

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment in this field is expected to grow by 25 percent between 2008-2018. In 2009 surgical technologists made a mean annual wage of $40,710 (BLS).
