Radiology Tech Schools
Radiology technicians take x-rays and help administer diagnostic non-radioactive materials into patients' bloodstream in the hopes of detecting fractures, toxins, and other internal abnormalities. Some technicians even use specialized diagnostic procedures such as computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for similar purposes. Given the detail-oriented nature of this type of work, most hospitals prefer to hire those who have received formal training from radiology tech schools. While it's true that many clinics, doctors, and hospitals will provide extensive on-the-job training as necessary, those who possess formal training from an accredited institution will have a decisive advantage over those who do not.
Types of Radiology Tech Schools Most radiology programs last anywhere from one to four years, depending on the level of training one requires. You can earn a certificate, associate, or bachelor degree in radiology or related fields. Obviously, the more certification you earn, the higher your earning potential, and the more quickly you'll be able to advance up the ranks.
Salary and Job Growth for Radiology Technicians Job growth for this particular profession is expected to be quite favorable. According to the US Department of Labor, positions for radiologists will grow faster than the national average for all other occupations. It cites retiring baby boomers and a quickly expanding healthcare industry as primary reasons for increased demand. In 2004, the median salary for radiology technicians hovered around $44,000 a year. The highest bracket earned as much as $60,000 a year. Education and tenure are both important variables for securing that type of income.
