Phlebotomy Training
Phlebotomists Training for the First Step in Diagnoses: Blood Work
Phlebotomists, also known as medical clinic technicians, work in medical offices, hospitals and clinics performing various tasks, but specializing in blood work. Many phlebotomists get their phlebotomy training by earning associate degrees as medical or clinical technicians. You can also learn on the job, foregoing formal training, however, an education is highly preferred. Many junior colleges, the military, hospitals, and vocational schools offer phlebotomy training. The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) lists 60 phlebotomy and medical assisting programs. Different states have various licensing laws in place, too.
Phlebotomist on the Job
As a phlebotomist, you could be collecting blood samples, requiring extensive precautionary and safety measures. It's also a much needed process, as blood samples are a critical first step in diagnosing a patient. You may also prepare samples for further examination. Under the supervision of a medical or clinical technologist, you may run manual tests on your samples. However, after phlebotomy training, your primary focus will be blood work.
As a phlebotomist, you can expect a job growth rate of 16 percent by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median hourly wage for a phlebotomist is at the bottom of the scale at $12.50 for work in a hospital or a private clinic, or $13 in a laboratory. Despite that, phlebotomists often work their way up to better paying positions, such as a medical laboratory technician or medical technologist. With the job growth in the medical technician field, phlebotomy training is a fantastic way to get your foot in the door.
