Paramedic SchoolChallenges and Rewards Await You in Paramedic SchoolEMTs that have done well in their jobs are eligible to enter paramedic school. However, to be a paramedic, a cool head, extensive emergency medical knowledge, and a taste for excitement and the unexpected are required. Entry to most paramedic schools can be difficult. You must be a certified as an EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate and have experience at that level, usually two years, just to enter. Once you've beaten the competition to get into paramedic school, expect a year to two year's worth of intense coursework, including anatomy and physiology in the classroom, and then a large portion of clinical work, either training in the field with a senior paramedic or assisting in a hospital. Some paramedic schools offer associate degrees for your work, but not all.Paramedics School Graduates Progress in the EMS SystemIn addition to the normal duties of an EMT, a paramedic can intubate, use needles and administer medications, among many other tasks. As a paramedic, you would be in charge of the medical emergency while on scene- giving orders to your assisting EMT and other emergency personnel, such as firemen and police officers. For future career prospects, most paramedics, along with their EMT counterparts, work in larger metropolitan areas. Rural areas typically employee volunteer paramedics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that by 2018, EMS occupations will have grown by nine percent. The median hourly wage for paramedics is $30,000. According to Payscale, some paramedics can make more than $48,000.
