Dental Hygienist Training

As a dental hygienist, your job is to remove hard and soft deposits from patients' teeth, instruct them in proper oral hygiene, and provide general preventative care. In addition, you are responsible for recording and monitoring abnormalities, symptoms, and potential diseases. In many ways, the duties you perform are just as important as those performed by the actual dentist. But unlike a dentist, your hours will be extremely flexible, since you are brought in for scheduled appointments only a few days of the week. If you're interested in a career where you help people while enjoying relative freedom and flexibility, it's worth exploring your dental hygienist training options.

What Does Dental Hygienist Training Entail?
Not only is dental hygienist training recommended, but it's also required. You must be licensed in each state were you work. Before becoming licensed, you must graduate from an accredited hygienist program and pass both a clinical and written exam. The bare minimum for entry is a certificate or associate degree in the field, but many go on to earn a bachelors or masters diploma as well. Subjects range from pharmacology to anatomy to nutrition to radiography.

Job Opportunities after Dental Hygienist Training
The US Department of Labor ranks this job as one of the fastest growing occupations in America. It cites both population growth and a greater retention of natural teeth as primary reasons for this rapid increase. It's also worth considering how much emphasis popular the media places on bright healthy smiles. So if you are trained to help patients maintain beautiful, white teeth, you can expect to make a median salary of just under $30,000 a year.
