Top 3 Reasons to Be a X-Ray Tech

X-Ray technicians (also known as radiological technicians and technologists) are responsible for taking X-Ray pictures of patients in carefully controlled environments. After taking X-Rays of the appropriate areas, they develop the film and prepare it for further analysis by the physician or surgeon. In some cases, X-Ray techs administer tracking agents into the patient's bloodstream to add greater clarity to the slides. There are many reasons why you might want to become an X-Ray tech, but below are 3 of the most popular attractions of the job:

1. Schooling to Become an X-Ray Tech Is Manageable
Educational requirements vary from facility to facility. Some hospitals need only 1 year of training, while others prefer 4. However, the average is closer to 2 years of formal training at an accredited vocational program. Not bad when you consider the salary potential.

2. X-Ray Tech Salaries Can Be Impressive
In 2006, the median salary for professionals in this field was nearly $50K. And the highest 10% earned nearly $70K that same year.

3. X-Ray Techs Enjoy Job Security
The US Department of Labor predicts that job opportunities for X-Ray techs could grow as much as 15% from 2006 to 2016. That's well above the national average for most other occupational fields. With that type of demand, you probably won't have to worry too much about job security. In addition, this type of growth could also have a positive effect on future salaries.

Although not an official reason to become an X-Ray tech, there's something to be said about the "coolness" factor. How many people can say that they rely on X-Ray vision as part of their job?
