Health Information Technology Courses
Because a patient's history often determine exactly what type of medical treatment he or she should receive, it is imperative that hospitals, physicians, and clinics maintain meticulous records that detail past observations, diagnoses, medical conditions, and surgical procedures. Maintaining this sizable database is the responsibility of health information technicians (sometimes called health information technologists). Although entry into this field can be secured through on-the-job training, an associates degree is strongly recommended. At the very least, one should take a few health information technology courses to learn the ropes.
What Health Information Technology Courses Will Teach You
Depending on the exact courses you take, you'll master computer science, statistics, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, ethics, legal aspects of health care, data coding, and information management. A typical associates program will last about two years.
Job Prospects after Health Information Technology Courses
Due to heightened insurance scrutiny, increased medical procedures, and an aging boomer baby population, the US Department of Labor predicts that job opportunities for this field will grow much faster than the national average for all other occupations. It seems that record keeping and database management within the health care industry is more important now than ever before. Hospitals, clinics, and private practices pay their health information technologists a median salary of $26,000 a year in order to ensure that records and databases are meticulously organized and maintained. And it's safe to assume that this salary will rise as the health care industry continues to expand.
