Because a patient's history often determine exactly what type of medical treatment he or she should receive, it is imperative that hospitals, physicians, and clinics maintain meticulous records that detail past observations, diagnoses, medical conditions, and surgical procedures. Maintaining this sizable database is the responsibility of health information technicians (sometimes called health information technologists). Although entry into this field can be secured through on-the-job training, an associates degree is strongly recommended. At the very least, one should take a few health information technology courses to learn the ropes.
